Unique chance to sail through the Mediterranean

Mid-October in Sweden often means gray and cold weather. But in the European south on the beautiful Mediterranean Sea, the fall is still sunny and warm. Temperatures vary between 20 and 30 degrees, meaning that the Mediterranean climate prevails. This is an important prerequisite for good sailing weather, with pleasant wind and sea, to fully enjoy the comfort of the yacht. Thus, we offer our annual unique chance to sail through the Mediterranean. It is about long sailing for 3 weeks where you as a guest are also part of the crew, as this is a requirement that you will read more about further down.

On board you will find both a skipper and a host who takes care of all the preparations for the sailing. Their task is to prepare the boat with all the necessary equipment. They also purchase the food that provides energy for sailing, and are responsible for planning the stages of the sailing trip. Your part in the crew's tasks involves being involved in both sailing and cooking on board. So it is advantageous to be able to cook and require documented nautical skills and practical experience of navigating and being on board a boat. In order for us to sail through the Mediterranean, the sailing stages are divided into watches where everyone on board takes turns with the tasks.

About the Mediterranean Sea

The Mediterranean is a sea connected to the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by the Mediterranean basin and almost entirely enclosed by land. In the north by western and southern Europe and Anatolia, in the south by North Africa and in the east by the Levant. The sea has played a central role in the history of Western civilization. Although the Mediterranean is sometimes considered part of the Atlantic Ocean, it is usually referred to as a separate body of water.

The Mediterranean covers an area of about 2500000 km2, representing 0.7% of the global sea surface. However, its connection to the Atlantic Ocean via the Strait of Gibraltar is only 14 km wide. The Mediterranean Sea has an average depth of 1500 m and the deepest recorded point is 5267 m in the Calypso Deep in the Ionian Sea.

The sea was an important route for merchants and travelers in ancient times, facilitating trade and cultural exchange between peoples in the region. The history of the Mediterranean is crucial to understanding the origins and development of many modern societies. The Roman Empire maintained nautical hegemony over the sea for centuries.

The countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea clockwise are Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Turkey on the north side. Syria, Lebanon, Israel are in the east. Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco are on the southern side. Malta and Cyprus are island countries in the sea.

The Mediterranean is arguably one of the most central places on earth, with history dating back to ancient times. Add to that a major contribution to modern civilization and an important strategic role in world traffic. This makes sailing through the Mediterranean a must on your sailing bucket list.

Sailing the Mediterranean with More Sailing

The Mediterranean sailing trip starts from Croatia and lasts for three weeks. The final goal is to sail all the way to Gran Canaria. The start is in mid-October, more specifically on October 13th we set off. On our way to Gran Canaria we will stop in some wonderful places in countries like Italy, Spain and Gibraltar. But it is important to know that the route can change from day to day depending on the weather and winds.

Weather permitting, we will stop at the southern tip of Italy and on Italian islands such as Sicily and Sardinia. There we get to experience the crystal clear waters and traditional Italian food. In Spain, we usually stop at Formentera and along the southern coast of Spain. This makes the last stop before Gran Canaria the magical Gibraltar. Sometimes we stay ashore one night and sometimes two nights, to enjoy the local community.

The magic of sailing is that you get to experience both sunrises and sunsets from the boat, as the sailing legs vary from one to four days. Everyone on the boat participates in the sailing, going on watch, helping to cook and creating a nice atmosphere on board. We sail the entire route as a team. This gives a unique chance to bond with unknown people, united for a common purpose - sailing through the Mediterranean! Furthermore, we find it wonderful that we at More Sailing can offer such experiences to our guests. It is an honor for us.
